DiscriminationAssessment activity
A challenge with diverse situations where the learners need to recognize discrimination. In addition, there could be some simple questions regarding the theoretical part (definition, EU legislation, etc.)
1.) Please carefully read the following statements/situations and decide if they are discriminating or not:
A) The employer checks the work of the employee and gives the following feedback: “Well done, I did not expect this high quality result from someone of your ability.”
B) John has a musculoskeletal impairment and therefore is not obliged to participate in physical education. This subject is obligatory to all his class mates. One day, the pupils are graded in parallel bars and all receive bad grades which drag down their average school grades. Some students find it unfair that John’s grade is not affected. Does this discriminate against the pupils who are obliged to take physical education?
C) Sandra has been working in an NGO for some time now as a volunteer along with other volunteers. There is a free paid position now and the volunteers are invited to apply for it. Since she always got very good feedback and her work was much appreciated, Sandra decides to apply. Unfortunately she does not get the position. She recently got married and also organised a small celebration with her colleagues in the NGO. Later she hears through office talk that she did not get the position because the manager expects her to become pregnant very soon.
D) A black women is attending an adult education course on programming and it became apparent lately that she is pregnant. She has a friend in the course, who also knows her white boyfriend. The friend gets very excited, when she found out and said: “Congratulations! You are so lucky. Babies from a mixed couple are always soooo cute.”
E) Two people have to work together on a small-scale project for their course. One of them has a visual impairment. The other person is very satisfied with the teamwork and states: “Thank you so much for your hard work. I really appreciate your structured organisation of the project.”
2.) Which of the following questions should you ask yourself from time to time to reflect on your own behaviour?
3.) Is the following statement true or false: “The EU has one single comprehensive law against anti-discrimination.”
4.) Where can you turn to in case of discrimination for example because of your age?
